My Top WordPress Plugins – Part 2

I wrote a blog post some time ago about my top 6 WordPress plugins for your blog. Much has changed in WordPress, social media and online since then, surprise, surprise. So I thought it was time for an update.

Here are my top WordPress plugins in addition to the ones or in some cases to replace the others mentioned before.

Akismet Popular and very effective plugin to protect your blog from comment spam. I actually use Akismet in addition to WP Spam Free which was mentioned in my previous post. I get an added benefit from Akismet which I use in my Contact form to prevent contact form spam as well.

All in One Webmaster Excellent, multi-purpose plugin. Useful for submitting your sitemap to various search engines including Google and Yahoo. One feature that I particularly like about this plugin is that it gives you a way to add your META Tag information without manually uploading code to your blog. META tag information is normally required to be added to your blog when you sign up for certain tools like Google and Bing Webmaster, Yahoo Site Explorer and Alexa. Finally, when you sign up for Google Analytics, an essential and free tracking and analytics tool, you can simply enter your Google Analytics ID instead of uploading lines of code.

Facebook Comments for WordPress This is the new (in some circles) way to have persons leave comments on your blog. Some bloggers and business owners have even disabled the blog comments system in favor of the Facebook Comments for WordPress. Here’s why, when persons leave a comment on your blog in the Facebook Comments box, it shows up in their Facebook Status stream by default with a link to your blog post. As a marketer this has enormous benefits. It spreads your blog post message virally and leads people to your Facebook Fan Page where they can learn more about you, subscribe to your list, buy your products, etc.

Robots Meta and WP Hide Post I use both of these plugins to keep certain pages and posts on my blog hidden and to keep them from being indexed by the search engines. This is important for special sales pages, landing pages, download pages that you may have on your blog. Note though that this does not keep PDF files that were uploaded to your site via the WordPress media library hidden. In order to hide those special files, I recommend reading http://webdesign.about.com/od/security/a/secure_files.htm

WP Greet Box or WWSGD(What Would Seth Godin Do) I actually use WP Greet Box on this blog. Basically, it displays a welcome message to your website visitors. You can customize this message to alert them to subscribe to your RSS feed or email list. In the case of WP Greet Box, it recognizes the referrer link and customizes the message accordingly. For instance, if someone clicks on your blog post from Twitter, it welcomes them from Twitter, recommends they tweet the post and follow you on Twitter.

In the case of WWSGD, it can be set to recognize your visitor on the 4th or 5th visit based on your setting and displays a different message to the returning visitor.

Contact Form 7 Basic contact form, but highly customizable. Can also be used with Akismet to keep spam at bay.

Notification Header Bar Plugins I wrote a blog post last week that listed 5 really good notification header bar plugins. Basically, these plugins allow you to have a bar at the top of your blog, above your header where you can place a special message with a link or your opt-in form. You can read that post here for some great options.

Those are some of the plugins that I am using on my blog right now. Are there plugins that you have used and found beneficial for your business blog? Please share them in the comments box below. Or if you share a favorite of mine mentioned above, would love to hear from you too.
